The national museum of Taras Shevchenko in Kiev was created in 1949 on the basis of former Gallery of paintings of Taras Shevchenko in Kharkov and Central State museum of Taras Shevchenko in Kiev. The museum is located on the boulevard Taras Shevchenko 12 (subway station Universitet). The collection in museum consists of unique masterpieces: the original drawings made by Shevchenko, the documents about his life and art work, manuscripts of his poems, rare photos of the poet and some of his friends, first printed pieces of his work with his signatures, almost all publications of his works and publications about him starting with the ones that were printed when he was still alive and finishing with the contemporary national and foreign publications. More than 24 exhibition rooms contain over 4000 pieces. You can see the works of famous painters, sculptors, writers and compositors that reflect the live in the Shevchenko times, his life and activity: the works of art made by Carl Brulov, Illia Repin, Vasiliy Tropinin and others. In some exhibition rooms you can see the materials that show the world importance of works created by Shevchenko, his poems translated into many foreign languages. On March 31, 2001 the museum was given the status of National. The newly renewed exposition was opened on December 22, 2006.
