The monument to Ekaterina II |
|
The monument to Ekaterina II and to the founders of Odessa was built in 1900.
In 1920 the monument was destroyed but in 2007 they put it back together and the monument took his old spot.
The main reason the monument was destroyed was the political view of Ekaterina II. She dismissed the Zaporozhskaya Sech. In 1794 Ekaterina II made an order to start building the city and the port. In 1900 as a thank you the citizens of the city decided to create a monument to her and all the founders: de Ribass, de Vollan, Potiomkin and Zubov.
In 1920, after the revolution, the monument was destroyed and the statues were given to the museum of local history.
Only in 2007 the monument to EkaterinaII and the founders of the city was put back to its place. Most part of the monument is original. The head of the Empress is the only thing that had to be replaced.
