The archeological museum in Odessa was opened in 1825 and is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. Today more than 160 000 exhibits are kept here.
All items represent great value as the witnesses of the ancient history of Northern Prichernomorie region. Also there are many items that represent the history of ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, moneys and medals.
The first two halls demonstrate the materials that embrace huge time period: since the human appearance till the second century BC. One of the most interesting items were found in the barrows of different cultures – Gumelnitsa, Tripolie, Usatovo.
In the “Golden storage room” of the museum you can see the authentic stuff made of gem stones, the most ancient date back to the II century BC. The most interesting things are the decorations found in Skiff and Sarmate’s burial grounds, the items made by Slavic masters etc.
The museum has more than 50 000 moneys and only some of them are represented. They are mostly the most ancient and made of gold that were used in Ancient Greece, Byzantine Empire, Rome. In the department of Russian numismatics you can see the coins starting with the first one ever made – zlatnik – by the prince Vladimir and the ones made by the last Kings.
The memorial medals are also represented in this department.
The collection of the items that represent the ancient history of Egypt is the third by size on the territory of ex USSR.
