The Taras Shevchenko Boulevard is a boulevard in the Shevchenko district in Kiev. It leads from the Bessarabska square till the Square of Victory. The streets that are connected to it: Pushkinska, Vladimirska, Tereshenska, Leontovicha, Franko, Pirogova, Kotsubynskogo, Kominterna, Belinskogo, Victory square. The modern name appeared in 1919 to honor famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. The boulevard Taras Shevchenko appeared as a street on city maps in 1830s. While constructing the building of the University on the near-by street Vladimirska, they decided to plant trees in the middle of the wide street. First there were only chestnut trees and lime trees. Later, in 1840s, the poplars were added that you can still see there.
