The museum “Philiki Eteria” opened for visitors in 1979 as a branch of the museum of local history. In September 1994, while celebrating the 200th anniversary of the city, the branch of the Greek Culture fund was opened in Odessa on the Krassna side street 16-20. In the past these buildings belonged to Greeks.
In 1814 this is the place where the revolutionary-patriotic organization “Philiki Eteria” was created. This organization was preparing the Greeks to the struggle for independence. “Philiki Eteria” is the thing that from that time till forever will be connecting the history of Odessa with the history of national and state renaissance of Greece.
These buildings were passed to the Philika’s disposal by the authorities of the city on very favorable terms. The museum is divided into 3 theme zones:
• The first zone tells us about the activity of Greek colony in Odessa before the revolution;
• The second and the third zone depict the history of creation of Philika Eteria as well as show us the administrative and economical way of life during the revolution in Greece.
Not so long time ago the new hall was opened for visitors. It has the ethnographical character and you can see the authentic things in there. Every year thousands of tourists and local citizens come to visit this museum for free. It is a very popular place to give lectures and lead excursions. The students of the city very often have conferences and lessons here.
