Mariinsky Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces of Ukraine. The Splendorous Baroque building was constructed in 1750-55th by architect B. Rastrelli for Empress Elizabeth, who had been deeply impressed by the beauty of Kyiv.
The palace served as a residence for many VIPs, arriving to Kyiv including Catherine II, who had visited Kyiv in 1787. In XVIII-XIX centuries the Palace served as the residence for Generals of Kyiv Governorate. In 1819 it was badly damaged by fire, and restored only in 50 years.
Nowadays, Mariinsky Palace is the ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine and serves for official receptions of the highest state level.
It is worthy of note that Mariinsky Palace is famous for its richly decorated interiors in the classical style with elements of Baroque and Renaissance, antique furniture, chandeliers, paintings of famous artists and murals. Originally the main facade has been turned to the City (Imperial) park laid in 1748 and named in honor of Maria Aleksandrovna, who cared for the restoration of the palace.
